The county has launched an online portal that allows people to download county records to their devices, a move that will help with research and public education.
It’s called the County of Durham Library.
It’s a digital archive of more than 4 million county documents, including records of local elections, land use and other records.
The county will launch its library portal this week, and it will be open to users starting Monday.
The portal will be a way to get more information on county records and services, county officials said.
“We want to make sure our residents have access to as much information as they can possibly get,” County Clerk Chris Koster said.
“We are creating a portal that’s going to provide people the ability to find the information they need to make informed decisions in their communities.”
The digital version of the county library will be available for download on a mobile device and desktop, county spokesman Chris DeHaan said.
Users can search for information by using keywords such as “library,” “local government,” “historical documents,” “land use,” and “regulations.”
The library will offer access to information in the county’s current official version, which can be accessed from the County Archives website.
Koster said the digital version will be updated as new documents are added to the library.
“Our goal is to be a platform for our citizens to have a greater understanding of the history and the issues that have arisen through the years,” Koster told the Associated Press.
The county is currently working with the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to make this portal available.
County records can be searched using the county website or the county digital archive.
Koster wouldn’t say how long the county will hold the records online.
Karen Brown, a retired University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor who has worked in the history department, said the move is a welcome move for the county.
“It’s an important step for the people of Durham to be able to access county documents that they don’t necessarily have access through the county,” she said.
The new portal will also be a “good way to help inform and inform the public about what’s happening in the Durham community,” she added.
